Panamera History

The Porsche Panamera hasn’t been around as long as many of the other models in the brand’s lineup, but it still manages to properly reflect Porsche performance and luxury heritage just the same. Here, we take a look at the rich history of the Panamera and examine how it became the icon it is today.

Porsche first introduced the Panamera back in 2009 at the 13th Shanghai Motor Show. Like the Porsche Carrera lineup, the Panamera name was derived from the Carrera Panamericana race. This high-end sedan was based on the Porsche 989, a concept vehicle that was introduced in the late 1980s. Its four-door design gave this performance-oriented vehicle a practical side, though it didn’t lose any of the power Porsche is known for.

The first Panamera model was introduced with three trim levels – S, 4S, and Turbo – which came equipped with a 4.8-liter V8 engine that produced 400 horsepower. This powertrain evolved over time, turning into a 3.6-liter V6 engine and eventually becoming the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that we know and love today.

Panamera Through The Years

In 2011, Porsche introduced two new variants of the rear-wheel-drive Panamera – a hybrid model that was considered the most fuel-efficient Porsche and the GTS, which offered even more power than the regular model at the time with its 434 horsepower.

As time progressed, Porsche updated the Panamera multiple times, giving it a facelift to keep its style from getting stale. The luxury car brand also introduced the supercharged Panamera S E-Hybrid model, a plug-in hybrid that put out 410 horsepower and had a top speed of almost 168 mph.

Porsche finally introduced the current generation of Panamera in early July 2016 in Berlin, Germany. This second-generation Panamera had a more sculpted body and a revamped shape, appealing more to loyal Porsche fans. It was offered as a Panamera 4S model or a Turbo model, underpinning Porsche’s performance history.

Now, the Porsche Panamera continues its legacy as a true driver’s car. Its refined ride, powerful performance, and ample cargo space make this luxury car a one-of-a-kind option in the automotive industry. You can learn more about this one-of-a-kind Porsche by stopping into Porsche of Spokane.
